IoT-Based Energy Monitoring Installation – Cold Storage Project

Executive Summary

In response to escalating energy costs and inefficiencies at the Sudit cold storage facility, our team deployed an IoT-based energy monitoring solution across five refrigeration units. By capturing real-time consumption data and identifying control failures, we optimized equipment runtimes and cooling loads. The initiative not only uncovered unnecessary continuous operation of idle compressors but also revealed opportunities to save up to AED 35,000 in annual operational savings.

Background

At the Sudit site, management noted unusually high utility bills despite no apparent mechanical faults in the refrigeration units. To pinpoint the root causes of excess consumption, they engaged our team. To address this, we proposed the installation of IoT sensors to monitor real-time energy consumption and identify inefficiencies.

Challenge

High energy bills despite properly functioning refrigeration units. Manual inspections and analog meters couldn’t pinpoint off load inefficiencies.

The Challenge

A key facility operator noticed escalating energy consumption alongside a noticeable drop in cooling output. Daily operational data showed unusually high efficiency values—typically a sign that something within the system was working harder than it should. Upon deeper inspection, one of the centrifugal chillers, a JCI unit, stood out for consuming excessive energy while failing to deliver its rated cooling capacity.

Solution

✅ Installed five IoT energy monitors on each refrigeration feeder.

✅ Connected devices to a cloud dashboard with real‑time data, alerts, and historical trends.

Results

✅ Identified compressors running ~20% longer during low‑load hours.

✅ Improved reliability with instant alerts for control failures and load anomalies.

✅ The Online monitoring system reduced dependency on manual inspections.
